In a major development, reports in England, as relayed by SPORT, claim that Barcelona have entered the race for the signing of Newcastle United centre-forward Alexander Isak.
The Swedish international is also a target for Premier League heavyweights Arsenal for the summer transfer window.
Isak to replace Lewandowski?
As per the report, Barcelona have shown an interest in Isak as a possible replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
At 35, the Poland captain is entering the final phase of his career and even though Barcelona have invested in Vitor Roque, it appears that they remain keen on another marquee centre-forward signing.
Erling Haaland has been touted as a dream target for club president Joan Laporta, but Barcelona’s finances make it impossible to sign the Manchester City superstar at this point or in 2025.
As such, Isak, who had been on the Catalans’ radars during his time at Real Sociedad, has now re-emerged as a target for the club.
Isak to cost €100 million
The report adds that any move to sign Isak from Newcastle United could cost around €100 million considering that the Swedish ace has a long-term contract until 2028.
The 24-year-old has shown a good level of performances this season with the Magpies and has netted 21 goals in 34 games across all competitions.
Isak has experience in La Liga and would be a long-term investment given his age.
However, at a time when big signings are unlikely due to the finances, any move for the Swede appears to be unrealistic for the Catalan heavyweights.
Furthermore, a new pivot and a left-winger are seen as top priorities. So, it would be extremely surprising if Barcelona invest heavily on a new striker this summer.
