After stepping down in 2010, Joan Laporta reclaimed the helm as FC Barcelona’s president in 2021, with aspirations of emulating the glory days he previously presided over.

However, things have not been as straightforward in his second stint. Barça have been facing financial roadblocks and their fair share of hiccups on the sporting front.

Still, the groundwork for a promising future is gradually being laid owing to the emergence of various talented youngsters as well as the construction of a new stadium.

To ensure he remains in charge, Laporta is reportedly evaluating the signings of world-class players as a means to win the elections in 2026.

Operation Erling Haaland

Now, in a major revelation, SPORT have come out to report that Joan Laporta wants to sign Erling Haaland in 2026.

According to the Catalan outlet, Laporta aims to secure the signature of Erling Haaland, as he views his acquisition as a strategic move to bolster both the team’s roster and his own electoral campaign.

This bold strategy is timed to coincide with the opening of the new Camp Nou stadium, which makes the Norwegian’s possible recruitment ‘a crucial card’ in Laporta’s reelection campaign.

The foundations have been laid

The report further argues that previously, in a pivotal discussion between Deco and Haaland’s representative, it was decided that Barcelona would try to recruit the player in 2026.

Given that the Catalans’ financial resources will likely be able to support a deal of that magnitude by that time, the prospect of his recruitment becomes considerably more feasible.

Haaland’s Manchester City contract runs until 2027, and reports of a release clause have been widely mentioned.

As such, a move for one of Europe’s most efficient strikers in two years cannot be ruled out.
