Robert Lewandowski has started the 2024/25 season on a hot goalscoring streak for FC Barcelona, showing signs of returning to his best form after a mixed campaign last time out.

However, the veteran centre-forward is 36 years old already and his contract stands to expire next year, although there is an option to extend it by another 12 months if he appears in a fixed number of matches this season.

Irrespective of that, Barcelona are keeping their eyes on the centre-forward market as they assess possible candidates to replace the former Bayern Munich superstar in the long run.

Viktor Gyokeres an option

In that regard, SPORT reports that Sporting CP’s Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres is a player that FC Barcelona like very much as an option to replace Robert Lewandowski.

Gyokeres signed for Sporting last year from Coventry City and has been on a tear ever since. Indeed, the 26-year-old enjoyed a spectacular debut season in Portugal, leading his team to the league title and finishing as the top scorer in the competition.

Across all competitions, the Swedish centre-forward scored 43 goals from 50 matches and assisted 15 more as well.

Gyokeres has started the new season in the same vein of form, having already netted 11 goals from just nine matches.

A number of top clubs across Europe have taken note of the Swedish international as a result, with Barcelona also keeping an eye on the 26-year-old.

However, given that he is contracted until 2028 and is attracting interest from many clubs, there is a belief that a bidding war could ensue next year, taking his transfer fee to huge amounts.

As such, despite liking Gyokeres, Barcelona are also keeping their eyes on other, more cost-effective options with Jonathan David of Lille, whose contract expires in 2025, also on the radars.
