In a major update, Barcelona have made an initial approach to explore the possibility of signing Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood next summer, reports Toni Juanmarti of SPORT.

Greenwood, 22, is currently on loan at Getafe from Manchester United and has shown a good level in La Liga, having returned to playing professional football after close to two years.

In 26 appearances, the Englishman has netted eight goals and assisted five more, with his performances catching Barcelona’s eye.

Barcelona exploring Greenwood move

Indeed, as per the report, Greenwood is a real target for Barcelona. The Manchester United loanee is highly regarded by the Catalan giants as a low-cost option to strengthen their forward line next season.

As such, Barça have already made some moves to approach him, without committing themselves in any way, as it is currently unknown how much ‘fair play’ they will have in the summer.

Greenwood’s performances have attracted the attention of Barça, among other teams, who see in the Englishman an interesting opportunity to reinforce the attack next season without the need to make a large financial investment.

Barça’s plans are to make some sales in the attacking area and make room for the English striker, who is valued for his ability to drive forward, burst of pace, eye for goal, and versatility.

The Blaugrana’s preference would be to reinforce the left side of the attack – a position where Greenwood can also play although he is more comfortable on the right or as a No. 9.

Greenwood’s contract with Manchester United expires in 2025, which would make him an appealing target as he is likely to be available for a cut-price fee, with his market value currently being around €7.5 million.

A return to Old Trafford is ruled out despite the club’s new owners insisting that a decision will be made at a later date. As such, a permanent exit is very much on the cards, with Barça now keen.

Another aspect that could work in Barcelona’s favour is that Manchester United are very aware of the Catalans giants’ youth system. And Barça could look to make the transfer cheaper by including some of their young players.

The Red Devils are looking for talents in La Masia and there are several interesting youngsters at Barcelona who have been making interesting progress in the youth and reserve teams.

Barça hope to have more details of what their financial situation will be in the summer in the next four or five weeks. It will be then that the sporting department will be able to start making real decisions, as they can only sound out potential targets.
