As they creep into the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, Barcelona are completely focused on this season before one of the most hectic summers starts to unfold for them.
Of course, the club want to return to financial equilibrium by offloading players and bringing in replacements, especially in concerning positions like holding midfield and left-wing.
However, the top priority will be potentially looking for a replacement for Xavi, who seems to be set to leave at the end of the season. While Barcelona will try to convince him to continue, it seems like a difficult operation.
As such, they have prepared a contingency list of potential names that can come in to replace him, among which is Julian Nagelsmann, although not as a top priority.
‘Lots of inquiries’
Currently managing the German National Team, Nagelsmann is out of a contract after the 2024 Euros, and could potentially sign a pre-contract with any team.
Director of Die Mannschaft, Rudi Voller spoke about the young manager’s situation, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano, saying, “There will be a decision in the next few weeks.”
“He has a lot of inquiries. It is no secret that we would to continue with him, but has many top clubs to choose from,” Voller added.
“We hope he stays with us.”
While no names have been mentioned by the German director, there will be a lot of teams looking for a manager this summer, including Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
Barcelona’s alternatives
Flick the top choice? (Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images)The ideal case scenario for Barcelona is that the team’s performances as the season comes to a close convince Xavi to stay at the club beyond June. However, should that not happen, there are a few names on the shortlist.
Hansi Flick seems to be leading this race, and has already spoken to the club about the squad and the city. He is very excited about coaching Barcelona, and would happily take up the offer.
Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton & Hove Albion is also an option, but could be difficult to pursue due to his release clause.
Barcelona are, therefore, also considering promoting Rafa Marquez from the reserve team. His work there has been impressive, with the team edging closer to promotion.
