Barcelona’s young midfielder Pedri has opened up about his role under manager Hansi Flick, shedding light on the tactical changes he’s experienced.

Pedri shared that Flick has specifically instructed him to stay close to the pivot during the build-up phase, helping to move the ball out from the back.

Once Barcelona have possession, Flick wants Pedri to push forward, contribute to the attack, and create scoring opportunities either by finding the back of the net or setting up his teammates.

“Flick asked me to be close to the pivot to get the ball out and, when we have the ball, to go up top and score goals and provide assists,” the midfielder told El Mundo.

Evolution of Pedri

Pedri’s evolution on the pitch has been interesting. In the past, he was often encouraged to make late runs into the box, but under Flick, his role has shifted slightly

Now, Pedri is positioned deeper, which is something he genuinely enjoys. He explained that this deeper position allows him to be more involved in the game, constantly interacting with the ball.

For Pedri, there’s nothing more important than being in touch with the ball as much as possible, and this role suits that desire perfectly.

While previous managers have urged him to advance up the field, Flick’s approach also emphasizes his responsibility to organize play from the midfield.

“It’s true that with Flick I’m playing deeper, but it’s a position I like. I’m in constant contact with the ball and, at the end of the day, what a player wants is to have the ball and the more the better.

All the coaches ask me to get forward, but Flick also asks me to organise.”

Thoughts on Hansi Flick

Pedri also spoke about Flick’s leadership style, highlighting the close relationship he has with the players. Despite Flick’s often serious demeanour, Pedri described him as having a heart, with a genuine ability to connect with his squad.

Flick is not just a stern figure; he’s someone who understands the importance of emotional support, willing to offer a comforting hug to any player in need.

This balance between seriousness and approachability has made Flick a respected figure in the dressing room.

“Hansi Flick is very close to us. Although he looks like a robot and is very serious, he has a heart and knows how to lead the group. He is able to give a hug to anyone who needs it and we can talk to him.”

The atmosphere under Flick contrasts sharply with the environment during Xavi’s tenure. Pedri recalled how, under Xavi, the team was frequently met with criticism, creating a tense atmosphere. Now, things have calmed down considerably.

“The atmosphere with Flick? With Xavi it was all criticism, everything seemed to be going badly and now everything is calmer.

He doesn’t get so much criticism in the media and he has brought a sense of seriousness, although he’s also a bit of a joker and he’s close to the players,” explained the midfielder.

Flick faces far less criticism from the media, and he’s managed to bring a sense of seriousness to the squad while maintaining a light-hearted connection with the players.

This blend of professionalism and camaraderie has been key to stabilising the team and improving the overall morale within the squad.
