A little under two years ago, Frenkie de Jong was close to being pushed out of Barcelona, with Manchester United gunning for his signing.

The fact that Barça needed urgent income and to reduce their wage bill meant that the Dutchman was seen as a means to achieve those targets. But the player dug his heels in and refused to leave.

Soon enough, De Jong became an invaluable member of Xavi’s squad and was even made a captain this season, with his situation completely flipping around.

Of late, there has even been talk of Barcelona renewing the Netherlands international’s contract, with his current one expiring in 2026.

De Jong no longer ‘untouchable’

However, a fresh report from TV3 paints a different picture as far as De Jong and his situation at Barcelona is concerned.

As per the update, De Jong is no longer considered an ‘untouchable’ at Barça and the club would study any big offers that come in for him in the summer.

As is well-established by now, the Blaugrana need more than one big sale in the summer for them to be able to achieve the 1:1 rule.

And the report argues that De Jong could be sacrificed given that he is one of the players with the highest wages at Barça which will rise even further next season.

Achieving the 1:1 rule is of pivotal importance for the Blaugrana, and generating revenue and reducing salary is crucial to that.

De Jong, whose market value stands at €80 million, would be the ideal candidate for Barça to achieve those objectives.

Barcelona director Deco has previously stated that there are no plans to offload De Jong. But the financial situation at the club may end up forcing his hands come summer.
