Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich has been on Barcelona’s agenda for the second summer in the running.

The Blaugrana wanted to sign the 29-year-old last year to replace Sergio Busquets but finances hindered the operation. There was strong interest in the German once again this summer, but the club opted to focus on attacking signings instead.

However, Kimmich continues to be on the agenda as a possible free-agent signing in 2025 when his contract at Bayern Munich expires.

Indeed, the Blaugrana are among the clubs keeping tabs on his situation at the Allianz Arena in hope that they can swoop him up on a Bosman deal in under 12 months.

Kimmich refuses to rule out renewal

However, in a recent interview with Maximilian Koch, Kimmich has refused to close the doors entirely on renewing his contract at Bayern Munich, insisting that the doors are open for him to negotiate a new deal with the German giants.

“You can always talk to each other reasonably, all doors are open to everyone,” said the 29-year-old German international.

“Generally speaking, I feel really comfortable here. All my kids were born here, we built a house. Of course, last season wasn’t so successful, that’s not what Bayern and I want. Now I’m hungry, full of energy,” he further added.

Blow to Barcelona’s hopes?

Even though talks over a new deal have not gone according to plans thus far, Kimmich’s statements hint that he is not ruling out the possibility of signing a new contract with Bayern Munich.

If so, it comes as a major blow to Barcelona’s hopes of securing the German midfielder’s services for free next year.

Should he pen a new deal with the Bavarian giants, signing Kimmich could become a costly affair, potentially putting him out of the Blaugrana’s grasps considering their frail financial situation.
