FC Barcelona are hellbent on addressing their grievances in the defensive midfield position this summer.

Indeed, the Catalan giants have targeted a number of high-profile targets that fit in with their budgetary constraints.

Among the names on their wishlist is Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino, who is highly sought after by several clubs.

Barça will face stiff competition to secure his signature. However, Merino’s desire to join them could give them a significant advantage in the race.

As per SPORT, Mikel Merino has rejected Atletico Madrid’s offer, citing a lack of confidence in their sporting project.

Sporting director Deco is considering dishing out a €30 million transfer offer for Real Sociedad since he is in the final year of his contract.

Arsenal, managed by Mikel Arteta, are also keen and ready to pay the same figure upfront, without any additional delays, which aligns with La Real’s preferences.

As such, with Atletico essentially discarded as an option, Barcelona and Arsenal are the main options for Mikel Merino.

Despite Arsenal’s superior financial strength, the strong relationship between Joan Laporta and Jokin Aperribay keeps Barcelona in contention.

In order to quickly direct their focus toward the signing of Merino, Barcelona are eager to wrap up the signing of Nico Williams who is their top priority. Afterwards, a move for the 28-year-old midfielder will be launched.
