FC Barcelona harbors an abundance of young prodigies, with the club not only providing a platform to homegrown academy graduates; but also constantly scouring the market for exciting opportunities.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is a player who has frequently been on Barça’s radar. The recently crowned Bundesliga winner is renowned as one of Germany’s hottest young prospects.
He has previously proclaimed in interviews that he dreamt of playing for Barcelona as a kid and has even regularly hailed Barcelona winger Joao Felix as his inspiration.
CEO of Bayer Leverkusen lavishes over Wirtz
Barça’s midfield is stacked with talent, featuring young players like Pedri, Gavi, and Frenkie de Jong.
But Fernando Carro, CEO of Bayer Leverkusen, unequivocally believes that Wirtz stands out among them all, not only as one of the best German players but also as a potential Ballon d’Or winner in the future.
When asked if Wirtz was the German Pedri, he replied, “I don’t want to compare players, but for me Wirtz is one of the best German players, if not the best.
“There are many good young players in his position at Barcelona, but for me it is clear that he is one of the favorites to win the Ballon d’Or in the future,” Carro professed, as quoted by AS.

Clubs all over Europe, including Barcelona, have been drooling over Wirtz’s talents, but according to Fernando Caro, the idea for him is to stay another season with Bayer Leverkusen.
“There is interest from many teams. But because of the relationship with his parents, their idea is to stay with us. In football you can’t plan for more than a year, but next season he will continue at Leverkusen,” Carro claimed.
This may come across as good news for Barcelona, as it affords the club some breathing room to stabilize their finances and potentially make a bid for the highly-regarded prospect.
