Today marked a special day for Bayer Leverkusen for they won the Bundesliga for the first-time ever in the history of the club.
Under the tutelage of Xabi Alonso, briefly linked with the Barcelona managerial job, Die Werkself have enjoyed a dream campaign as they knocked Bayern Munich off their perch and have secured the Bundesliga title with still five matches to be played.
The title was sealed today after Leverkusen defeated Werder Bremen 5-0 earlier today, with Florian Wirtz, a long-term Barça target, scoring a hat-trick.
Ilkay Gundogan congratulates Bayer Leverkusen
Following Bayer Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga title triumph, Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has taken to social media to congratulate Xabi Alonso and his men on their success.
Gundogan, who is no stranger to winning the Bundesliga, having done so with Borussia Dortmund back in 2011/12, stressed how Bayer Leverkusen were the deserving winners this season in his message on X.
“Congratulations to Bayer Leverkusen on the Championship. There can be no two opinions on whether this is deserved. What an achievement – wow! If the team stays together like this, they can also go far in the UCL. I’m excited!”
As mentioned earlier, Gundogan himself is a Bundesliga title winner and knows what it takes to bring about Bayern Munich’s downfall. As such, it does not come as a surprise to see him recognise the merit of Leverkusen’s triumph.
Focus on a crucial week
Gundogan seems to have enjoyed Bayer Leverkusen’s triumph, but he and the rest of the Barcelona squad will be fully focused on a crucial week ahead.
Indeed, the Catalans play two season-defining fixtures against PSG (UCL) and Real Madrid (La Liga) over the next seven days.
Gundogan, who was rested for the game against Cadiz this past weekend, will be raring to go and lead Barcelona to victories in both those encounters and more.
