The news of Oriol Romeu being set to leave FC Barcelona for Girona came a bit out of the blue when the midfielder was on the pre-season tour of the USA with the rest of the squad.

While there had been links in the past, it was suggested in recent weeks that Hansi Flick was ready to keep hold of the Spaniard for the upcoming season.

But, things changed and Romeu quickly flew back to Spain this past weekend to finalise his transfer to his former club.

Romeu’s medicals today

Now, journalist Nil Sola reports that there is a complete agreement between Barcelona and Girona over Romeu’s loan move to Montilivi, with only a signature being pending at this moment.

The veteran midfielder is scheduled to undergo his medicals sometime today and is expected to be available to train with his new teammates as early as tomorrow.

Romeu enjoyed a good season at Girona during 2022/23 which led to him earning a move back to Barcelona last summer.

However, after a good start, things did not go according to plan at his boyhood club, as he fell down the pecking order and eventually hardly played.

Girona manager Michel had been vocal about taking Romeu back to the club, as was the Catalan’s club director, Quique Carcel.

Now, they appear to have gotten their man, with Romeu set to undergo his medical today before the move is made official.

While Girona may be re-signing Romeu, they are understood to be totally uninterested in taking Pablo Torre, who spent the last season on loan, back from Barcelona for another stint.
