In a recent report from SPORT, it has been revealed that Mason Greenwood, the forward for Manchester United, was considered by Deco as a potential signing for Barcelona. However, Greenwood is now set to join Marseille in France’s Ligue 1.

Last season, Greenwood played on loan for Getafe, and he has now committed to Marseille until June 2029, with the French club agreeing to pay €30 million for his transfer.

Interestingly, back in May, rumours surfaced about Barcelona’s interest in Greenwood. There was even talk of a potential season-long loan swap involving Vitor Roque

For what it is worth, this was not the first time Greenwood had been linked to Barcelona, as the club’s scouts had been monitoring him for a while. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid also showed interest as they considered options to replace Memphis Depay.

Greenwood had an impressive season with Getafe, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists in 36 matches.

For Barcelona, however, missing out on Greenwood might actually be for the best. Despite his talent, the club already has a strong player in the same position: Lamine Yamal.

Greenwood, a left-footed forward who usually plays on the right wing, would have been competing for a spot that Yamal has firmly secured.

Furthermore, Barcelona are not in a position to match Manchester United’s €30 million valuation for the player. Investing such a large sum in a player who fills a position already well-covered does not make sense for the club’s current situation.

Ultimately, while Greenwood could have provided healthy competition, Barcelona’s financial constraints and existing roster make his move to Marseille a more logical outcome.

This transfer allows Greenwood to continue his development and showcase his skills in a new league, while Barcelona can focus on strengthening other areas of their squad.
