In an interview with Polish media outlet TVP Sport (h/t SPORT), Wojciech Szczęsny’s brother has disclosed intriguing details about the goalkeeper’s decision to join FC Barcelona.
Szczesny signed for Barcelona only a few weeks ago, arriving as an emergency replacement for the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The veteran could even be in contention to make his debut when Barça take Sevilla tomorrow.
It must be remembered that the former Poland international had announced his retirement after terminating his contract with Juventus before making a U-turn to sign for the Blaugrana.
Now, the 34-year-old’s brother has revealed that Szczesny’s move to the Catalan club was not impulsive but the result of careful consideration.
“I know he actually had more options before FC Barcelona approached him,” his brother commented.
Szczesny turned down significant offers to keep himself available for a special opportunity like the one Barcelona represented.
“Due to the stature of a club like FC Barcelona, such an offer had to be considered,” he added, highlighting the relevance and weight of the Catalan institution in the final decision.
Szczesny’s brother also revealed that emotional and symbolic factors also played a role, as he said: “The club’s magic and the feeling that he could relive a special moment by returning to football was key.”
Beyond that, the influence of Robert Lewandowski, a close friend and compatriot, has also been important, confirmed the goalkeeper’s brother.
“The choice was simple for him because his friend Robert Lewandowski has been playing in Barcelona for some time,” he said.
At 34 years old, Szczesny was at a point where finding a club that met his professional and personal expectations wasn’t easy.
“Barcelona’s offer came at the right time,” his brother explained, emphasising that the combination of circumstances – from his desire to settle in Spain to his advanced stage as a player – made signing for Barça the perfect option.
Finally, he also mentioned that offers from other competitions, such as the Saudi Arabian league, were tempting for their financial potential, but Szczesny preferred the sporting challenge.
“That financial retirement would be a very pleasant solution,” his brother said, but the goalkeeper chose to continue his career in elite European football, opting for the challenge that Barcelona offers.
