While Xavi Hernandez handed debuts to players from the Barcelona academy in positions across the field, the defensive midfield was one arena where he hesitated.
Given the manager’s preference for Oriol Romeu over the likes of Marc Casado, the general understanding on the outside was that the youngsters still lacked the experience to take over at the highest level.
Thus rose the need for a new signing in the department and the Catalans were rumoured to be interested in Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich on that front.
Operation ruled out
While the Bavarian star eventually did not arrive in the summer, the Blaugrana have continued to be linked with his name especially given that his contract runs out next summer.
As reported by SPORT, however, Barcelonaare no longer prioritising the possibility of signing Kimmich in the future and have opted to trust La Masia-provided solutions in the department.
The primary reason for their decision to abandon their pursuit of Kimmich is the player’s financial demands which are even creating a difference between him and his current employers over a renewal.
The German star currently earns between €15 to 20 million per season depending on variables and the is hoping to use his contractual situation to demand a superior salary on his new deal.
Bayern Munich, however, are asking him to lower his salary slightly to ensure he can sign a long-term deal that can see him retire at the club as a legend.
Talks between Kimmich and Bayern are going well and an agreement could be reached soon.
For Barcelona, however, the figure is simply too high and not a position worth investing in given the quality of the squad.
As relayed by the Spanish publication, Barcelona are set to trust Marc Bernal and Marc Casado for the long haul and are satisfied by their performances.
While the latter is the one with prominence this season, the administration see a special spark in Bernal particularly and see him as a player who can mark an era at the club.
