It has been another disappointing campaign for Barcelona midfield prodigy on the injury front as he has succumbed to as many as three thigh injuries of similar nature so far in 2023/24.

The latest injury came about this past weekend when Barça took on Athletic Club in La Liga at San Mames, with the Spaniard needing to be taken off just before half-time.

Pedri was in tears on the bench after his substitution, indicating the gravity of the situation. After tests were carried out on Monday, it was reported that he could be out for 5-6 weeks, although the club are not willing to set a return date for him yet.

Concerns growing about Pedri’s fitness

Now, Javi Miguel of AS has come with a worrying update regarding Pedri and Barcelona’s assessment of his condition, claiming that all options, including a summer sale, is not being ruled out.

Within the club, this new injury has been received with absolute bewilderment and unease, especially because both the player and the professionals who accompany him and the coaches had put in everything to avoid the recurrence of this injury.

All the prevention work, the hours spent in the gym, the strict diet, the psychologist’s help, the coach’s management of minutes, the ordered and balanced life outside the game – everything has gone down the drain.

At the moment, the uncertainty surrounding Pedri’s situation is such that nobody dares to set a return date. “He will be ready when he is ready”, they say in the dressing room, aware that the situation is entering an extremely dangerous zone.

With the operation of surgery off the table, it less room for manoeuvre for the medical services, who will have to start again from scratch.

All options on the table

There is a lot of concern within Barcelona about Pedri, whose market value stands at €90 million, and his condition. After all, he is one of the team’s franchise players and the cornerstone of the project.

However, in the last three seasons, he has barely been able to play 50% of the games, with the added handicap that he tends to be absent in the final stretch of the season when the team is playing for all the titles.

Barcelona are aware that this situation cannot go on forever and that formulas must be found to find a definitive solution. Right now, all scenarios are being considered and none are being ruled out, not even a possible sale in the summer.
