The future of Oriol Romeu has been a curious case in Barcelona this summer. Not more than a few months ago, the midfielder was destined to leave the club at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

However, things have changed since. Following the appointment of Hansi Flick, Barcelona have had a different perspective on Romeu’s future, especially in the wake of recent injuries.

Going into the new season, Barça are dealing with the absence of Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Gavi through injuries, which has necessitated the retention of depth in the team.

Oriol Romeu will continue at Barcelona

In a major development, Catalunya Radio now reports Oriol Romeu is all set to continue at Barcelona next season.

It appears Hansi Flick has informed the midfielder that he counts on his services next season, despite enduring a disastrous homecoming last season.

Ever since the arrival of Flick, Romeu has had a chance to work closely with the German tactician and learn his methods.

This, combined with Barcelona’s apparent injury woes in midfield has compelled Flick to put his faith in the veteran Spaniard going into the new campaign.

Romeu abandons plans to leave

The report further adds that Flick’s trust in Oriol Romeu has convinced the midfielder to abandon the idea of leaving the club.

His agent has stopped looking out for opportunities for the player to leave Camp Nou this summer and it seems the midfielder is set to continue for at least another season.

Over the past few months, Romeu has been strongly linked with an exit. In fact, a return to Girona was on the cards for the veteran star.

But after earning Flick’s trust, Romeu is ready to utilise his experience and leadership to Barcelona’s benefit next season.
