For several years now, Barcelona have been criticised for being overly loyal to their footballing philosophy, almost to a fault. Due to this reason, they have potentially missed out on a lot of great targets, and games due to an overconfidence in their technical ability.

The infamous comebacks by AS Roma and Liverpool in the Champions League against Barcelona, for example, stand testament to poor physical preparation on Barça’s part.

Those games, and others in the Champions League have proven that Barcelona need to change or add more depth to their training, especially, by integrating more intense routines to their regime.

Luckily, though, the current group of players, especially from La Masia, at the club are not quite the specimens of yesteryears and have come up with a much different mentality with more focus on mental and physical preparation.

Demand for more intensity

Preparing for the Champions League quarter-finals against PSG, the Catalans presumably believe that they need to up their game on all levels if they want a shot at the trophy.

Barcelona have already suffered at the hands of Real Madrid’s physical levels in the Spanish Super Cup as the Spanish Capital outfit ran riot in the 4-1 win, with Vinicius Jr scoring a hattrick.

Barcelona’s current squad suited to intense games

With Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Pau Cubarsi, Robert Lewandowski, and Alejandro Balde, among others part of the squad, the current Barcelona roster is rather well-suited to more intense games compared to teams of yesteryears.

They have been able to handle the more physical games in a better capacity this season, with wins against Porto, Atletico Madrid, and Napoli proof of the same.
