The past few weeks have been quite tense at FC Barcelona, with performances and results not going according to plans. Things only got more complicated after the 4-1 hammering that they received at the hands of Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.

So, last night’s Copa del Rey clash against Unionistas de Salamanca was crucial in many ways. Hearts sank in the Catalan capital when Xavi’s men conceded first against the third-tier side but eventually, the Blaugrana came back to secure a 3-1 win.

While it might not have been fully convincing at times, the win does provide some relief and reprieve from the pressure.

Barcelona celebrated Real Madrid’s elimination from Copa del Rey

Not long after their win against Unionistas, though, Barcelona were greeted by another piece of good news as arch-rivals Real Madrid were eliminated from Copa del Rey by Atletico Madrid.

The Madrid derby went into extra time after the two teams were locked in at 2-2 but goals from Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme in the added 30 minutes sealed it for Diego Simeone’s side.

Now, SPORT’s Ferran Correas is reporting that the Barcelona players celebrated Griezmann’s goal in extra time on their flight back from Salamanca.

The Frenchman’s goal against Real Madrid came minutes before the Blaugrana boarded their plane and it was celebrated in style on the flight. The report claims that the celebrations from the players were cries more of liberation than of joy.

With Real Madrid eliminated, Barcelona are one of the favourites to win the Copa del Rey. They will face Athletic Club in the quarter-finals later this month.
