Ever since Hansi Flick took over the reins of Barcelona, a number of youngsters have received an opportunity to prove themselves in the first-team setup.

One such individual happens to be Gerard Martin, who got a chance in pre-season under the German tactician and has since not looked back.

Martin was chosen as Alejandro Balde’s cover at left-back, with Barça letting Alex Valle leave on loan as a result.

The 22-year-old former UE Cornella man, who joined Barça Atletic last season, appears to have won the full faith of the 59-year-old manager.

Renewal talks moving forward

The 22-year-old’s existing contract at Barça expires in 2025 and as such, the Blaugrana are eager to tie him down to a new contract, with the player making an impression on Flick.

So far, Martin has featured in eight matches for the Catalans’ first team, even registering an assist, although he has been found somewhat lacking in the three matches he started.

It may very well be a case of jitters of playing at the highest level, because as mentioned earlier, Martin has managed to earn Flick’s confidence with his abilities.

As such, Barcelona will make all efforts to ensure that he signs a new contract, with such a move also ensuring that the 22-year-old does not end up leaving as a free agent when his deal runs out.

The current La Liga leaders are working to close several renewal agreements in the months to come, with Martin being one among them. And, as things stand, negotiations are headed in the right direction.
