In a big development, Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona have reached an agreement over a new contract for young left-back Gerard Martin.

The 22-year-old Spaniard joined Barça last year, arriving from UD Cornella and becoming a part of the Barcelona Atletic setup.

Having impressed Hansi Flick during the pre-season in the summer, Martin has found a place for himself in the first-team roster with the Catalans now.

New contract until 2028

Martin’s existing contract was set to expire at the end of the ongoing season and as such talks over a new deal had been ongoing for several weeks now.

Even though the left-back has not always impressed when given a chance, he enjoys the confidence of manager Hansi Flick and as a result, Barcelona had been eager to tie him down to a new deal.

And, as per the report, the La Liga leaders have succeeded in their endeavours, having now agreed a new contract with Martin.

The defender’s contract was due to be renewed if he reached 30 appearances for the first team, but the club wanted to tie him down before then to show their confidence in him.

The 22-year-old will now extend his contract with Barcelona until the summer of 2028 while he will also be shielded by a release clause worth €100 million.

Martin has already played in ten of the 13 official matches this season, starting in three of them, firmly establishing himself as the backup for Alejandro Balde.
