There have been major developments at the coaching helm for Barcelona over the last week as it now seems that Xavi has decided to continue as the manager of the club for another season, at least.
He had announced his departure from the club after the 3-5 loss against Villarreal at home late in January, and seemed adamant about his decision for the longest time despite Barcelona picking up form at the correct time of the season.
The Barcelona board kept pushing for his continuity, though, after realising that they will not be able to find a new manager who could adjust to the club’s current financial budget and also stick true to their values.
One of the managers on their potential shortlist was Barça Atletic coach Rafael Marquez, who has been doing impressive work with the reserve side this season.
However, with Xavi set to continue at the club, Marquez’s future was put into question.
One-year extension on track
According to a report published by SPORT, Barcelona are set to offer Marquez a contract extension for another year with Barça Atletic.
With the team in the playoffs spot right now and pushing for promotion, the club want him to continue with the youngsters and oversee their development as they hope to break into the first-team.
Barcelona are very happy with his work, especially in light of how his squad has changed multiple times over the course of the season due to injury and first-team call-ups.
What does the future have in store for him?
As of now, it seems that Barcelona will retain Xavi’s services for another season, at least, before re-evaluating their options next summer.
Rafa Marquez could become key during that time, especially if the club are in search of a new manager.
Rumours have also suggested that Barcelona are keeping tabs on top managers such as Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, and Mikel Arteta, with all of their contracts expiring in the summer of 2025.
