Ilkay Gundogan could become an unexpected protagonist in the closing days of the summer transfer window for Barcelona.

Recent reports suggest that Gundogan has requested to leave the club, a decision that a player of his professionalism would not make without serious thought.

Notably, while Hansi Flick would want for him to continue given his experience, there are reasons enough for Barcelona to ultimately cash in on him.

On that note, here we take a detailed look at why Barcelona should certainly do so.

Overcrowding in Midfield

Barcelona’s midfield is packed with talent, and the arrival of Dani Olmo only intensifies the competition for a starting spot. Olmo was brought in with a hefty price tag of €45 million plus additional bonuses.

He is most comfortable playing as a ‘10,’ a position where Gundogan has been most effective. With Olmo now in the mix, Gundogan could find himself struggling to get the minutes he desires.

In addition to Olmo, Barcelona have other players who excel in the playmaker role. Pedri is another young talent who thrives behind the striker, and Fermin Lopez is also expected to play a significant role upon his return.

Even further down the line, Gavi is expected to make a comeback from his injury by the end of October, adding another layer of competition for Gundogan.

Moreover, Gundogan could be deployed in a double-pivot role, but his game would be more restricted by the defensive duties required in this position.

With Frenkie de Jong as a fixed pivot when fit, other options like Marc Casado, Marc Bernal, or even Pedri could serve as the second pivot, leaving Gundogan’s best qualities underutilised.

A Mutually Beneficial Exit: Easing the Wage Bill

Gundogan’s departure would not only benefit him in search of more playing time but also aid Barcelona financially. The club is eager to reduce its wage bill, and Gundogan’s substantial salary could be a significant factor in this regard.

Reports suggest that his annual earnings are around €15 million, a sum that could be better allocated to register new signings like Olmo or Nico Williams, who are yet to be officially registered with the club.

Barcelona are aware that facilitating Gundogan’s exit could provide them with the necessary financial leeway to finalise these registrations.

Gundogan, understanding the situation, does not want to become a burden for the club and is open to a cordial departure if it helps both parties.

Future Prospects: A Gentleman’s Exit

It is no secret that if this exit materialises, it will happen on good terms. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, he remains committed to the team’s success.

He recently posted a message on social media celebrating Barcelona’s victory over Valencia, showing his dedication to the club until a final decision is made.

If he does leave, a free transfer could be on the cards, allowing him to choose his next destination freely. His Turkish heritage could lead him to consider a move to Galatasaray or Fenerbahce, while lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia might also tempt him.

Regardless of where he ends up, Gundogan is determined to finish his time at Barcelona honourably.

Should negotiations stall or a transfer deal fall through, he is fully prepared to contribute to the team, starting with the upcoming match against Athletic on the second day of the league.
