Barcelona have been working to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club for weeks together now but are yet to taste success.

Not very long ago, a transfer seemed to be a foregone conclusion, with the 22-year-old understood to be eager to play for Barcelona, where he would also link up with close friends like Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde.

However, in recent days, there has been a lot of pessimism surrounding the move, with reports suggesting that Nico is seriously considering the prospect of staying at Athletic Club for one more season.

Inaki Williams – the biggest obstacle

Now, Mundo Deportivo has come forward with a report highlighting the biggest obstacle in Barcelona’s path that is stopping Nico Williams from agreeing to the move.

As has already been reported widely, Barça are waiting for the final green light from the 22-year-old having already spoken on multiple occasions with his agent, Felix Tainta.

Williams, who was on holiday away from Bilbao, has been contemplating his decision taking advice from his entourage and close circle, who seem to be egging him to continue at the Basque outfit.

In this sense, his brother Iñaki Williams is the biggest obstacle for Barcelona, because he is the one who is pushing the UEFA Euro 2024 winner the hardest not to leave Athletic this summer.

At Athletic Club, they are confident that Williams will continue. He and his brother dreamt of winning a title with the club of his life and then playing together in Europe and this time he has the opportunity to do so.

As such, people at Athletic are convinced of his commitment and there are even certain authoritative voices within the club that speak of offering him a new contract to convince him.

Barcelona, for their part, still remain hopeful of closing the deal in the days to come even though pessimism continues to grow about the deal.
