In recent years, the Spanish Super Cup has become quite the spectacle, especially after the change of format.

In 2019, the competition adopted a longer-format formula and it was decided that four teams would participate in the tournament.

These four teams would essentially be the top two teams in La Liga and the two finalists in Copa Del Rey, with rules and conditions that would accommodate any vacancies.

Barcelona’s opponent in next Spanish Super Cup

Keeping that in mind, Barcelona’s opponent for next season’s Spanish Super Cup semifinal may have already been decided.

Providing the Catalans would finish in the second spot in La Liga come the end of the season, they are slated to face Athletic Club.

This could prove to be a tricky contest for the Catalans, given the fact that Athletic Club are known for their robust defence and the ability to counter quickly.

Last time around, Barcelona were up against CA Osasuna in the semifinal. They were able to beat the Pamplona outfit 2-0, before succumbing to Real Madrid in the final.

Barcelona would be hoping for better luck this time around. It must be noted that the Blaugrana do have a mixed record against Athletic Club this season.

The Catalans secured a narrow 1-0 victory during the first half of the season, with youngster Marc Guiu scoring the opener. In the reverse fixture, however, the team was held to a goalless draw.

A lot may change between now and then, though, with Barcelona slated for a makeover in the coming summer – one that could see the exit of many star players, paving the way for Barça to new sign stars.

Meanwhile, if Barcelona can miraculously seal the league title come the end of the season, they will face a much easier task in the form of Mallorca, who were defeated by Athletic Club in the Copa Del Rey final.

Despite the club’s success in Copa Del Rey this season, Mallorca are struggling in La Liga and are flirting with relegation. They are currently 15th in the league table, only six points shy of the relegation zone.
