Not more than a few weeks ago, Guido Rodriguez was widely expected to become Barcelona’s first major signing of the summer.
Barça had reached a pre-agreement with the Real Betis midfielder and the player was supposed to join the club on a free transfer.
However, a lot has happened since, with Barcelona notably bringing in Hansi Flick as their new manager. The club also had to negotiate the exit of Xavi Hernandez.
Barcelona’s Guido Rodriguez pursuit has stalled
In the midst of all the action, it appears Barcelona’s deal to sign Guido Rodriguez has hit a snag, reports Mundo Deportivo.
As per the report, Barcelona’s agreed deal with Guido Rodriguez has expired on May 31, meaning the club will once again have to agree a new deal with the Argentine international.
This also means that Rodriguez is free to talk to other clubs over a free transfer this summer. Given the player’s quality and experience, there should be no shortage of suitors for the Real Betis star.
A race against time?
The report adds that Barcelona are still awaiting a final call from La Liga in regard to how much the club can spend in the coming summer.
Once La Liga confirms Barcelona’s salary cap for the summer, the club will restart their attempts to sign the Argentine midfielder.
Until then, Barcelona are facing a race against time, knowing that the player is open to holding talks with other clubs.
Atletico Madrid, for one, have emerged as one of the potential suitors for Rodriguez, as he looks to take the next step in his career. Barcelona, though, remain in pole position in race to sign the midfielder.
