Journalist Fernando Polo has made a sensational revelation via Mundo Deportivo that Barcelona approached Frenkie de Jong with a contract renewal three months ago, but the midfielder has yet to respond to the offer.

The former Ajax midfielder’s immediate future at FC Barcelona has been thrown under the bus mostly because of the team’s troubles with finances.

Once considered as ‘untouchable’, the Dutch midfielder now seems to have lost this title as Barcelona hope to generate €200 million from player sales.

The aforementioned outlet affirms that three months ago when Barcelona launched advancement, they proposed a long-term deal running until 2029 and that does not include any kind of reduction in his wages.

Barcelona continue to wait

Three months ago, the sports department of the club sent Frenkie de Jong an offer to renew and extend his contract. Surprisingly, there has been no response from him.

At Barcelona, there are two aspects of this deal. First, it would be excellent for the team if he accepts but if not, they will think of another proposal, or the last option would be to sell him at a decent price.

Recent credible reports suggest that De Jong may not be interested in extending the contract and might actually be considering leaving Barcelona before his current deal expires in 2026.

Barcelona want honesty

Barcelona, represented by director Deco, have proposed extending De Jong’s contract for at least three more years, maintaining his current salary.

It’s important to note that De Jong initially accepted lower payments in his first two seasons to help the club during the economic challenges caused by the Covid pandemic.

Barça are hoping for an honest response from De Jong regarding the renewal offer. If he wants to leave, they prefer him to express it openly. Depending on his response, Barcelona will react accordingly.

Since his contract ends in 2026, the club considers this year crucial for a decision. If there’s no renewal until 2025, it would weaken Barcelona’s negotiating position.
