With Marc-Andre ter Stegen set to be sidelined for potentially the rest of the season, FC Barcelona have decided to sign a new goalkeeper to make up for his absence.

The Catalans can only sign players who are currently unattached to any club if they want immediate reinforcements or will have to wait until the January transfer window.

At the moment, the option of signing a free agent seems to be gaining weight with names like Keylor Navas, Edgar Badia, Loris Karius, Wojciech Szczesny, and Claudio Bravo doing the rounds.

Bravo, for his part, has offered to come out of retirement to rejoin Barça. Meanwhile, Navas, a former Real Madrid and PSG goalkeeper, would also be willing to sign for the Blaugrana.

Another ex-Real Madrid star on the agenda

Now, Toni Juanmarti of SPORT reports that another former Real Madrid goalkeeper, Antonio Adan, has emerged as a possible option for Barcelona to temporarily replace Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Adan, 37, has been a free agent since this past summer after bringing an end to his stint at Sporting CP.

The Spaniard, a product of Real Madrid’s La Fabrica youth setup, made 18 senior appearances for Barça’s arch-rivals, while also having stints with Real Betis and Atletico Madrid.

The 37-year-old has vast experience in Spain, having made nearly 130 appearances in La Liga and 16 in the Champions League, which counts in his favour.

Notably, he played alongside Heiko Westermann, who is now an assistant to Hansi Flick, at Real Betis during the 2015-16 season

Adan made 22 league appearances and six in the Europa League last season with Sporting. Having recovered from a quadriceps injury he sustained towards the end of the previous campaign, the 37-year-old is training by himself awaiting offers.

Ultimately, Barcelona’s final decision remains to be seen. The club may choose to sign one of the available goalkeepers immediately, wait a few weeks for further evaluation, or even hold out until the winter market.
