Barcelona are preparing to initiate contract discussions with goalkeeper Inaki Pena in the upcoming months, as reported by Gabriel Sans in Mundo Deportivo

Pena, who has recently dispelled any uncertainties regarding his position, has delivered impressive performances in crucial matches against Sevilla, Bayern Munich, and most notably, Real Madrid.

In these three fixtures, he conceded only two goals while securing victories, which has left Hansi Flick very pleased with his decision to trust him in goal. This success has led Barcelona to recognize the necessity of renewing his contract sooner rather than later.

Complete confidence in Pena

The positive feedback does not end with Flick; Pena has also earned the respect and support of his teammates in the dressing room.

They have noted the way he has handled some criticisms is becoming increasingly valuable to the club. Flick has commended Pena’s personality, further solidifying his standing as an essential player for Barcelona.

Now, Barcelona’s plan is to extend his contract, which currently runs until June 2026, following a renewal in May 2023. During that negotiation, which was resolved swiftly, the club set a substantial termination clause of €400 million.

Barcelona want to start new talks

With the goalkeeper entering the final year of his contract, the club understands the urgency of beginning talks soon, especially considering that there is substantial interest and Marc-Andre ter Stegen is still recovering from a serious knee injury and may not return until the next season.

While there have not yet been any formal discussions regarding the contract renewal, both parties seem confident that they will come together to negotiate in the future.

Interestingly, Pena, who is currently sharing duties with Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, is not contemplating a move away from Barcelona at this time, which works perfectly for Barcelona.
