Barcelona were given a massive boost this midweek as star midfielder Pedri was given a medical discharge ahead of the Valencia tie.

Pedri’s medical discharge marked an end to a ‘record quick’ recovery for the Spanish international, who has been suffering from injuries for the better part of the last three years.

Barcelona to receive €300k for Pedri’s injury

Since Pedri picked up the injury while on international duty with Spain, FIFA are entitled to compensate Barcelona as part of their Club Protection Programme.

The midfielder picked up a knock on July 5, in the Euro 2024 quarterfinal against Germany. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with a serious internal lateral sprain in his left knee.

In Pedri’s case, FIFA’s Club Protection Programme became applicable on August 2. And given he was medically discharged on Saturday, the midfielder was out for a total of 16.

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, this amounts to a figure of €308,200, which FIFA must pay to Barcelona as part of their programme.

This is barely any compensation for the sheer degree of loss Barcelona had to incur. Pedri, after all, is a key component in the club’s midfield unit, but the injury this summer saw him miss the entire pre-season under Hansi Flick.

This could prove to be consequential and may slow Pedri’s integration into the Barcelona setup, which now operates under Flick’s entirely new philosophy.

Nevertheless, Pedri’s focus will shift to the game at hand. The midfielder has made the squad to face Valencia this evening, though it remains to be seen whether or not he will play a prominent role in the proceedings.
