A recent report from SPORT has revealed a significant development regarding Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona.
The club does not want the Dutch midfielder to feature in their plans for next season unless he agrees to renew his contract. This decision appears to be influenced by his recent struggles on the pitch and ongoing injury concerns.
De Jong’s 2024 campaign has been one to forget, marked by challenges both on and off the field. His form has taken a hit, and an ankle injury has further derailed his progress.
This season stands out as his most difficult since joining the Catalan side, leaving him far from the player who once commanded the midfield with ease.
Hansi Flick likes him
Manager Hansi Flick had previously shown faith in De Jong, offering him encouragement and outlining a significant role for him in the team.
However, Flick also made it clear that De Jong needed to be at full fitness to meet the demands of Barça’s competitive setup.

This setback has had a direct impact on his role within the squad. Rising talents such as Marc Casado and Gavi have surpassed him in the midfield pecking order, leaving De Jong with limited opportunities to prove his worth.
Barcelona are clear
Looking ahead, Barcelona’s sporting management is preparing to make their position clear to De Jong in the coming months. If he does not agree to a contract renewal, he will likely be informed that he is not part of the club’s plans for the next season.
The club is ready to urge him to find a new destination next summer, even if it means selling him at a reduced price.
Additionally, Barcelona are said to be taking a firm stance on contract negotiations. If De Jong agrees to a renewal, it will be under reduced terms. The club sees this as the only viable way to extend his stay.
Should he accept, an agreement could be finalised by early summer. If not, the club is prepared to bench him for the entirety of the final year of his contract and facilitate his departure.
