Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, is reportedly considering his future at the club, despite the team enjoying a strong run of form, reports Diario SPORT.

Appointed by Joan Laporta in 2023, Deco took on the challenging role with limited financial resources, famously describing himself as “the poorest sporting director in Europe.”

The difficulties have taken a toll, and recent reports suggest that he is now contemplating his departure from Camp Nou.

What led to Deco’s struggles?

Deco’s tenure has been marred by financial constraints and a lack of autonomy. The club have been battling economic fair play restrictions, with Laporta promising repeatedly to resolve these issues.

However, progress has been slow, and Deco has found himself navigating a maze of internal politics and limited transfer funds.

The failure to secure key signings such as Nico Williams and Stefan Bajcetic against wealthier European clubs has further strained his position.

Despite these challenges, Barcelona is currently on a remarkable winning streak, suggesting that Deco’s work behind the scenes has paid dividends on the pitch.

Yet, his personal frustrations have grown. Internal conflicts, including clashes with agents and disagreements over the club’s transfer strategy, have compounded the difficulties.

Even successful transfers, like that of Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig, have come at a high cost, requiring extensive negotiation and delayed payments.

Additionally, Deco’s efforts to offload players and free up salary space have been largely unsuccessful, adding to his frustration.

Disappointed by unmet promises and financial limitations, Deco is rumoured to be weighing his options, with some sources suggesting he may step down soon.

As he prepares for a holiday, it remains uncertain whether Deco will return to Barcelona or choose to leave the role he once embraced with optimism but now sees as a losing battle.
