Following the long-term knee injury to captain and first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen back in September, Barcelona moved swiftly to bring in Wojciech Szczesny as an emergency signing.

The Blaugrana convinced the former Juventus star to come out of retirement and sign for the club until the end of the season, which he was happy to do.

However, since his arrival, Szczesny has yet to make a single appearance for Barcelona, with manager Hansi Flick making it very clear that Inaki Pena remains his preferred option in goal.

As the wait for the former Poland international to make his debut for Barcelona continues, he discussed his current situation in detail during an interview with Eleven Sports.

Szczesny fully agrees with Hansi Flick

Talking about his situation and when fans can make him see his debut for Barcelona, Szczesny admitted that he was not at 100% upon signing for the club and more than agrees with Flick’s decision to not play him yet.

“You know, I don’t know [when my debut will happen]. I told you from the beginning that I needed to get back to full fitness first, and that was the most important thing. Now I feel, I would say, mentally and physically ready to play,” said Szczesny.

“But I have no secret that if I was the coach of this club, I would play the same number of games that I have played so far. So it’s hard to be disappointed with this situation because I agree with it 100%.”

Dismissing speculations that he and his family were unhappy with his situation at Barcelona, the veteran shot-stopper added:

“You know, I don’t think there is any point in answering that. My family is very happy, and my family is the main reason why we decided to move to Barcelona.

“Both my wife and my son were very excited to move here. We all as a family find ourselves very comfortable here. My son is very happy with his school, he has a lot of friends here, and so are we. We are generally very happy.”

The former Arsenal and Juventus star further admitted that he was the first one to stand in support of Inaki Pena and insist on Flick sticking with him when there were some murmurs about the La Masia star’s performance.

“What does Hansi Flick tell me? He doesn’t tell me anything. We talk a lot. When the team was in a bad moment and the media tried to put pressure on it, I was the first to say that Inaki Pena deserved full trust,” said Szczesny.

Continuing, he added: “I also have a slightly different perspective. As someone who has already been on the other side of his career, I think I am able to assess things more objectively.

“Will I play a match until the end of the season? I will play, calmly. […]”

The goalkeeper also opened up on his first experience of the Clasico, which Barcelona won comfortably at the Santiago Bernabeu, saying:

“Great. It was a beautiful experience. I lived it as part of Barcelona. It was an exceptional experience and gave me a lot of smiles on my face. I might have even exaggerated my joy a little after the match.”

As things stand, the expectation is that Szczesny could finally make his debut for Barça next month when they take on UD Barbastro in the Copa del Rey Round of 32.
