Nico Williams, who has been making headlines since his impressive performance at the 2024 Euros, has been the subject of incessant transfer rumours, with Barcelona being a potential destination.

The 22-year-old’s recent international success only fueled speculation about a possible move to the Catalan giants.

Despite the intense speculation and Barcelona’s apparent efforts to secure Williams’ transfer, the momentum for this deal is waning as the transfer window nears its end.

Instead of striking personal terms with Barcelona, the Basque winger is leaning towards continuity at his boyhood team Athletic Club, for whom he has scored 20 senior goals.

As such, what once seemed like an almost certain transfer has now lost some of its steam, leaving fans feeling a sense of letdown.

Barcelona have still not thrown in the towel

However, according to Ferran Correas of SPORT, Barcelona remain optimistic about their chances of signing Nico Williams despite ongoing uncertainty.

Given that Nico Williams has yet to affirm his next destination and is only considering staying in Spain, the Blaugranes have been clinging to hope about a potential transfer.

The Catalan giants believe that Nico Williams being offered an opportunity to reunite with several of his Spanish teammates serves as a promising incentive.

Moreover, the fact that Williams turned down PSG’s offer also means they do not have to worry about any external competitors.

The decision will come soon

Having recently just returned to Bilbao following a well-earned vacation, the 22-year-old winger’s decision is expected to come soon.

Neither Barcelona nor Athletic Club are aware of his next move, leaving the situation open-ended.

Barcelona are prepared to hold off until August 12, when Nico is scheduled to return to training with Athletic Club. Meanwhile, they continue to work on signing RB Leipzig star Dani Olmo.
