Pau Cubarsi has enjoyed a meteoric rise at FC Barcelona over the past couple of months. Since making his debut in a Copa del Rey clash in January, the teenage defender has grown into a regular in Xavi Hernandez’s side.
Last night, the 17-year-old also made his debut for the Spanish national team, featuring as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
Given his talent, quality, and potential, Barça see the teenager as the long-term future of the club’s defence along with Ronald Araujo.
As such, the Blaugrana are working to secure the future of Cubarsi, whose current contract expires in 2026 and has a small release clause worth €10 million.
Barcelona table short-term renewal
MARCA has brought forward a detailed update on the situation, claiming that Barcelona have already tabled a short-term contract renewal to Cubarsi.
It is a proposal that is based on two things. Firstly, as he is a minor and has not yet reached the age of 18, he cannot sign a long-term professional contract.
For this reason, Barça have proposed an immediate contract improvement and an increase in his release clause, which at the moment is very low.
The second part of the offer is that the proposal is only for a little less than a year from now when he will be 18 years old, on 22 January 2025. Then he will be able to sign a full professional contract.
At that point, Barcelona’s intention is to tie him down to a long contract that would run until 2030 or 2031, depending on when it is signed, and with a significant termination clause.
The value of the release clause could go up to €1 billion, but that is something that has yet to be defined. The same has been conveyed to the player already.
Barcelona aware they will have to pay
Cubarsi, despite his age, wants to be paid what he deserves as a player who is already becoming a regular in the senior team and is also an international player for Spain.
Barcelona, for their part, know they have to pay because they consider him to be the centre-back of the team’s future alongside Araujo.
The good news is that there are no concerns on either side. Cubarsi and his entourage have conveyed to Barcelona their desire to continue at the club where they feel very comfortable. His idea is to stay for a long time.
Barça director Deco already revealed earlier this week that everything was ‘on track’ as far as Cubarsi’s renewal is concerned.
