Earlier today, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente announced the final 26-man squad list for UEFA Euro 2024, cutting three players from the preliminary list he had announced.

One of the players who has been axed is Barcelona defensive prodigy Pau Cubarsi, while four of his club teammates, Pedri, Fermin Lopez, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal, made it to the final list.

Cubarsi to play in the Olympics

Cubarsi’s exclusion from the Spain squad for the European championships all but guarantees that he will play in the Olympic Games in France next month, reports Helena Condis.

The 17-year-old defensive prodigy made his senior debut for Barça only in January earlier this year and has already become a mainstay in the side.

On the back of his stellar displays, Cubarsi even made his debut for the Spanish national team in March and had been widely tipped for a place in the Euros this summer in Germany.

When he was included in the preliminary 29-man squad for the tournament, it was taken for granted that Cubarsi would be on the flight to Germany.

On top of that, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) had also been trying hard to convince Barcelona to let him play in the Olympics as well, something that the club was against as they did not want the teenager to play in two back-to-back tournaments.

As such, Cubarsi has now been left out of De la Fuente’s squad for the Euros but is all but certain to be on the list for the Olympic Games in Paris.

It would mean that the defender will miss the pre-season tour of the USA while he could also sit out of the early parts of the new season if Spain go deep in the Paris Olympics.
