A few days ago, we reported that Barcelona might have to sell Inigo Martinez in the summer owing to some registration issues.

However, journalist Jordi Gil has affirmed via SPORT that the 32-year-old will indeed continue at Barcelona next season as the management sees him as a fundamental piece for next season’s project.

Martinez joined Barcelona last summer, arriving from Athletic Bilbao on a free transfer. The veteran centre-back has proved to be an important squad player for Xavi this season mostly because of the injuries the team has faced.

Amidst the future of several players at Barcelona, it emerged that the 32-year-old could be one of the casualties due to the overbooking of defenders, but that is certainly not the case.

Well within the management’s plan

While the identity of Xavi’s successor as the coach remains undetermined, the sports department is actively shaping the squad for the upcoming campaign, with Martinez firmly in their strategic plans.

In fact, it is said that Deco holds a highly positive view of the player, reflecting the decisions of Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff, who, in response to Xavi’s request, orchestrated the signing last year.

Now, there are talks of his age, but even at 32 years of age, Martinez not only retains considerable strength but Barça have exhibited greater consistency when he has graced the field.

A secret weapon in Xavi’s Arsenal

It is to be noted that Martinez endured initial challenges to secure a spot in the lineup following his recovery from an injury. Although there have been a few more fitness challenges along the way this season, the manager has always rated him highly.

Against Mallorca, the 32-year-old showcased a promising partnership with Pau Cubarsi. Together, they thwarted their opposition by minimizing their scoring opportunities.

As the season progresses, especially if Barça advance to the Champions League quarterfinals, Xavi will need to rely on the natural centre-backs in his arsenal, namely, Ronald Araujo, Martinez, and Cubarsi.

While Martinez may not secure a starting position against Napoli, Xavi views him as a dependable asset, a top-tier defender poised to contribute significantly to the team’s resurgence in this crucial phase of the season.
