After a narrow win over Las Palmas, Barcelona are gearing up for arguably their most important match of the season as they take on PSG on April 10.
This game will serve as the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals, with Barcelona keen on establishing an early advantage heading into the second leg.
However, as Barcelona approach this game, there are multiple uncertainties over the availability of certain first-team stars, including midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Pedri.
Sergi Roberto may start vs PSG
Amid the uncertainties in the midfield department, a recent report from SPORT has highlighted the role Sergi Roberto may play in the coming weeks.
In light of the injury crisis in midfield, Xavi has put his faith in Roberto in recent weeks. The veteran has not disappointed either, playing a central role in the club’s recent victories.
With that in mind, Roberto has established himself as a potential starter against PSG on April 10.
The report even adds that Xavi trusts Roberto a lot and feels calm whenever he is on the pitch. That should add to his chances of starting against PSG.
Xavi’s midfield dilemma
However, it must be noted that Roberto is still not a guaranteed starter against PSG. A lot may depend on the return of Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman is more than likely to return to full fitness before the crucial UCL encounter. But he will return without any competition rhythm.
That leaves Xavi to choose between de Jong and Roberto, with Ilkay Gundogan and Andreas Christensen seemingly emerging as guaranteed starters in midfield.
Pedri could be another option as he is also in contention to return. But Barcelona are likely to proceed with caution in regards to the youngster’s fitness and it won’t be surprising to see the player not featuring in a single minute against PSG.
