As Barcelona prepare for the start of the pre-season campaign on July 10, Sergi Roberto will be one of the key names missing from the setup.

The veteran midfielder’s contract at Camp Nou expired at the end of the 2023/24 campaign and the deal has not been renewed since.

That means Sergi Roberto is currently a free agent, which makes him ineligible to be a part of Barcelona’s pre-season setup.

Roberto’s future in limbo

According to a recent report from Diario AS, Sergi Roberto has not been called up pre-season training, in light of his status as a free agent.

The midfielder is still awaiting a call from Barcelona regarding his contract extension. Hansi Flick, for his part, has refused to rule out a potential contract extension for the veteran midfielder.

Flick believes Roberto’s experience and leadership could be crucial in an otherwise young Barcelona setup.

However, the player’s fate will depend on Barcelona’s Fair Play margin. It is no secret that the club have other priorities at the moment, meaning the ball is now in Roberto’s court.

Two options for Sergi Roberto

The Spaniard now has two options – either wait for Barcelona to resolve their economic situation and come up with an offer or look for other opportunities elsewhere.

Barcelona, though, have insisted that the issue may take a while to resolve, which is why Roberto is reportedly considering other offers on the table.

Recent reports suggest Roberto has given Barcelona a deadline of July 10 to resolve their economic situation and come up with an offer.

If Barça fail to do so, Roberto is likely to consider offers from Serie A and other leagues. The veteran has been linked with a move to the Premier League as well.
