Following the serious season-ending injury to Marc-Andre ter Stegen, FC Barcelona had to enter the market for an emergency replacement and roped in Wojciech Szczesny, who made a U-turn on his retirement to sign for the Catalans.
Having not trained for a period after leaving Juventus, Szczesny needed some time to get up to speed after joining Barça but is now ready and prepared to play.
However, the performance of Inaki Pena between the sticks has meant that manager Hansi Flick has had no reason to make any change and give Szczesny a chance.
Szczesny might have to wait until January
As such, SPORT reports that Szczesny might have to wait until January to get his opportunity in the team when Barcelona will begin their participation in the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
Since his signing in October, Szczesny has been on the bench for six games at Barcelona without getting an opportunity – two in the UEFA Champions League and four in La Liga.
Considering how well Pena has done in the past few matches, the 34-year-old Szczesny is likely to have to wait for his chance until the turn of the year.
After all, Flick retains full confidence in the La Masia graduate, who has conceded ten goals in 11 appearances this season while keeping five clean sheets.
Szczesny’s contract with Barcelona expires at the end of the season and it is extremely unlikely that he will be retained by the club beyond that.
