In recent comments, journalist Sergi de Juan highlighted in AS that even with the potential signing of Wojciech Szczesny, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is determined to keep Inaki Pena as the starting goalkeeper for Barcelona.

According to the report, the club has communicated clearly to Pena that he will be the first-choice keeper, while Szczesny, with his extensive experience, is expected to take on the role of a backup.

For this to happen, though, it is crucial for Pena to continue performing at a high level as Szczesny will be looking to reclaim his position once he regains full fitness, and this creates a competitive environment that Pena must navigate.

Situation is unpredictable

The reality is that no one can predict how things will unfold in this situation. Flick has indicated that he values having an experienced player in the crucial goalkeeper position, and Szczesny fits that description perfectly.

His track record speaks for itself, but there remain questions about his fitness level after being sidelined for a couple of months.

Meanwhile, it is also worth mentioning that Pena has expressed frustration regarding the ongoing speculation about potential goalkeeper signings following the recent misfortunes faced by the team.

In an effort to support his player, Flick reassured Pena ahead of the match against Getafe that the club was not rushing to find a replacement. Despite this reassurance, the pressures of the situation seem to contradict his words.

For the time being, however, it seems that Pena’s position as the first-choice goalkeeper is secure. He must keep his focus and continue to prove his worth on the pitch.

The situation surrounding the goalkeeping position remains dynamic, and while Pena currently holds the top spot, the arrival of a seasoned player like Szczesny could change the landscape.
