Three months ago, Barcelona sent a contract renewal offer to midfield maestro Frenkie de Jong. Fast forward to the date and the the former Ajax captain is yet to get back with a response.

Given the delicate finances of FC Barcelona, de Jong, who was once deemed untouchable, can be put on the transfer market if he does not come back with a definitive answer. And now, according to Mundo Deportivo, if he does leave, Barcelona would want at least €100 million for his services.

Barcelona are optimistic

Should he choose not to extend his association with Barça, the Blaugrana would not hamper his departure if he expresses a desire to leave. Currently, the transfer valuation for De Jong is set at approximately €100 million by the club.

Although this amount is substantial, they perceive it as reasonable compared to fees paid by other clubs for midfielders of lesser renown. Notably, Chelsea spent €115 million on Moises Caicedo and €121 million on Enzo Fernandez.

This is why Barcelona are confident of the fact that if de Jong opts against renewing his contract, he will attract interest in the market, particularly from the Premier League.

Manchester United or Chelsea can make an offer again

Clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United are considered potential suitors willing to make a significant financial commitment. There is also anticipation regarding Manchester City, who expressed interest in signing him in 2019, with even Pep Guardiola reaching out to attract him.

It’s worth noting that De Jong contemplated leaving Barça during the last summer transfer window due to the strong interest from Manchester United. Despite Erik ten Hag, his coach during the successful 2018-19 season at Ajax, persistently stressing, de Jong consistently restated his ambition to succeed at Barcelona.

So far, Barcelona are hoping that the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United would be willing to pay what they are demanding for the midfielder. On the other hand, City could join the race again, but they might not be okay to payt he asking price.
