The unfortunate ACL injury that has kept Gavi off the pitch for more than ten months has also disrupted Barcelona’s plans regarding his contract renewal and improvement.

The midfielder is one of the players whose contract expires in 2026, and there is no doubt that no one imagines a future for him away from the Catalan outfit.

As reported earlier today, Barça have begun working on securing the futures of players whose contracts expire in 2026, with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Pedri taking priority.

Gavi also belongs on that list and SPORT has now come forward with an update about his contract situation.

Talks to be held after his return

As of today, neither Barcelona’s sporting department nor Gavi’s entourage have met face-to-face to negotiate the terms of his new contract beyond 2026.

However, both the player and his agent, Ivan de la Pena, are aware of Barça sporting director Deco’s intentions to hold talks over a renewal.

The Blaugrana are eager to secure the continuity of its key players a year before their current contract expires to avoid interference from other clubs and increased pressure at the negotiating table.

Gavi, a La Masia graduate, is one of these pillars for the future whose current deal expires on June 30, 2026.

However, in the contact that both parties had several weeks ago, it became clear that it is not the right time to open negotiations and start discussing numbers, which could lead to the usual indiscretions in the media that might affect the player’s return to action.

Both the player and the club understand that the only priority surrounding Gavi should be completing the final phase of his lengthy recovery process.

After several months of inactivity, the 20-year-old, dubbed as a future club captain, is already in the final phase of his recovery and it is expected that he will be ready to reappear coinciding with the end of the next international break.

No one wants to set an exact date, but medical clearance could come sometime late in October, during another challenging phase of the fixture calendar.

Barcelona’s intention aligns with Gavi’s desire to remain committed to the club. And, soon after the player’s return to the pitch, the time should come for Deco to activate the negotiating process with his agent to try and seal the agreement for the future.
