As the current season progresses and enters its final stages, Barcelona’s hierarchy is already laying the groundwork for the upcoming campaign.
Last summer, the Catalan giants strategically loaned out several players to lighten the wage bill, a move that included full-backs Sergino Dest and Julian Araujo.
After a dismaying season with AC Milan on loan, Dest joined PSV Eindhoven, while Julian Araujo was sent out to work under the tutelage of former Barcelona B manager Garcia Pimienta at Las Palmas.
Both players have done incredibly well to meet expectations. But considering the options Barcelona have in the full-back position and their financial state, one of them will likely have to take the fall.
Barcelona’s dilemma with Dest and Araujo
Now, according to AS the club may sell one of them and return the other.
Given the track record of both players, it is fair to assume Julian Araujo stands a better chance of returning to the Catalan outfit, especially considering he plays in a far superior league to Dest.
The Mexican full-back has showcased immense defensive aptitude and has morphed into a regular for Las Palmas.
Meanwhile, Dest Sergino Dest appears to have found his best form again at PSV Eindhoven. But following three years of hardships at AC Milan and Barcelona, a return to Barça seems infeasible.
The Dutch side possess a €10 buy option for the American and will likely attempt to make Dest’s move permanent as they are happy with his performances.
Araujo aspires to return to Barcelona
Having been signed by MLS side LA Galaxy, Araujo has not yet had the chance to showcase his skills for Barcelona in an official match, but he dreams of succeeding at the club.
“I feel very good at Las Palmas, but of course, my dream is to return to Barcelona,” he said via Fabrizio Romano.
“I hope to have a chance at Barça,” he added.
Should their be a major sale in defence, especially with Jules Kounde linked with an exit, Barcelona could look to retain Julian Araujo, who offers something much different to Joao Cancelo as a full-back.
