Journalist Nico Rodriguez has confirmed that if Nico Williams starts pre-season with Athletic Club, he will not leave this summer and the deadline for this decision is August 1.

Nico is currently preparing for the Euro 2024 final against England and after this event, he is expected to take a brief break before beginning preparations for the upcoming season.

This situation means that Barcelona have a tight timeline if they want to secure his signature. They must finalise any deal before the end of July.

Barcelona and Nico have an agreement

Recent developments have shown that Barcelona has made significant progress in their pursuit. Reports indicate that personal terms have been agreed upon between the club and the player.

As reported before, Barcelona officials met with Nico’s agent to discuss the details of the potential transfer last week. The meeting concluded with both parties reaching an agreement on personal terms.

This means now, all Barcelona have to do is to reach an agreement with Athletic Club. Interestingly, two main challenges lie ahead: paying Williams’ €58 million release clause and ensuring they can register him within their tight salary cap.

Athletic Club are still rigid

Athletic Club, on their part, have been firm in their stance, stating they will not negotiate a lower fee and any club wishing to sign Nico Williams must pay the full €58 million termination clause.

Barcelona had initially hoped to find a way to split the payment of the transfer fee, but this option is no longer viable. Athletic Club’s clear stance leaves no room for negotiation on this point.

Given the situation, Barcelona needs to act swiftly. Despite Nico’s strong interest in joining Barcelona, he is not willing to wait indefinitely. He wants the matter resolved as soon as possible, making it imperative for Barcelona to finalize the deal quickly.

Pressure on Barcelona?

The outcome of this transfer saga will be determined in the coming weeks. If Barcelona can meet the financial demands and navigate their salary cap constraints, Nico could become a key addition to their squad.

However, time is of the essence, and any delays could result in the talented forward starting the new season with Athletic Club.

The pressure is on for Barcelona to move quickly and decisively. Their ability to secure Nico Williams’ signature will depend on their willingness to meet Athletic Club’s demands and their efficiency in managing the necessary financial arrangements.
