It is well-established by this point that Barcelona and Joao Cancelo are eager to extend their partnership beyond the ongoing season.
Since joining the Catalans on loan last summer, the 29-year-old full-back has performed at a high level and convinced the club officials to keep him beyond the current season.
Furthermore, there are no other natural senior right-backs in the squad apart from Cancelo, even though Xavi has counted on Jules Kounde and Sergi Roberto in the position. The Portuguese’s ability to play on both flanks is another point in his favour.
As such, Cancelo’s continuity is seen as an important task for the summer. Things are not that straightforward, though, given Barcelona’s need for some other signings and their frail financial situation.
Another loan deal will be sought
As has already been reported, Manchester City wish to sell Cancelo permanently in the summer, for a fee of around €25-30 million, something that Barcelona are unwilling to pay.
As such, MARCA reports that Barça will seek another loan deal for the Portuguese international in the summer.
Man City spent €55 million on Cancelo’s signing from Juventus and are eager to recoup as much as possible from his exit.
But, Barcelona’s precarious financial situation means they are not in a position to spend as much on the right-back, even if there is some cash injection into the club in the months to come.
Therefore, Barcelona’s commitment to the full-back is to keep him for a second year on loan and this is what they will officially propose to Manchester City when the time comes.
Both Cancelo and Barcelona believe Manchester City may finally accept the proposal for a new loan as there is no way he will return to the Etihad following his falling out with Pep Guardiola.
