Oriol Romeu is nearing a move to his former club Girona on loan and has taken leave from Barcelona’s training camp in the United States.

The midfielder’s move to Michel’s side is expected to be completed during the weekend with his medicals scheduled as well.

While it is good news for the Blaugrana that they have finally sanctioned a departure, the Spaniard’s exit opens room for debate over the pivot position. After all, Romeu was the only natural pivot in Hansi Flick’s squad.

Decision to be taken

As revealed in a recent update by Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona manager Flick and director Deco are yet to make a decision on whether a new signing in the defensive midfield is necessary.

They have not yet made the call, however, and will take a final decision only after the team’s pre-season tour in the United States.

Flick wishes to test out all his available resources in the department including the young academy stars Marc Bernal and Marc Casado who impressed in the team’s opener.

Further, the likes of Andreas Christensen and Frenkie de Jong can also serve in the position on need.

Conditions to be met

The outlet furthers that Deco already has a list of potential targets should the manager desire a new signing. Needless to say, names were filtered based on some fundamental criteria.

The sporting director has focused on players whose signing will not command any sizeable fee and who are either free agents or towards the end of their current contracts.

Barcelona, as it stands, have their resources focused on the attack and it is clear that no big name will arrive in defensive midfield. Needless to say, La Masia appears to be the best hope.
