With a deal for Nico Williams appearing extremely unlikely, Barcelona have been exploring alternatives for the Athletic Club winger.

One of the players that the Blaugrana are looking at as Plan B to reinforce the left flank is Liverpool attacker Luis Diaz.

The 27-year-old Colombian international is well-liked at Barcelona and was even touted as club sporting director Deco’s ‘dream target’ not very long ago.

Barcelona to miss out on Luis Diaz as well?

However, there is now a chance that Barcelona may end up missing out on the signing of Luis Diaz as well.

This is because the Liverpool and Colombia winger has reached an agreement over a five-year contract with Premier League champions Manchester City.

This update comes from journalist Marcos Benito via El Chiringuito TV, who reports that Pep Guardiola’s side are ready to pay €70 million to sign Diaz from Liverpool.

If true, this comes as a disappointing blow for Barcelona, who had set their sights on Diaz as one of the main alternatives to bolster the attack with the deal for Nico Williams seemingly on the brink of collapse.

Diaz, 27, was very close to joining Barcelona in January 2022, when he was still at FC Porto, but the Catalans ended up opting for Ferran Torres over the Colombian who then signed for Liverpool.

There have been talks held between the winger’s agent and Barcelona president Joan Laporta in the recent past regarding a possible transfer. And as mentioned earlier, Deco is also an admirer of the winger.

But it appears that Manchester City might have taken a substantial lead over Barcelona by already agreeing a five-year deal with Diaz and being willing to splash €70 million to sign him from Liverpool.
