For the first time in 28 years, Barcelona finished the season without any ‘number ten’ in the team, as Ansu Fati was on loan to Brighton & Hove Albion.

But as Barça prepare for the new season, the marketing team is pushing the club to find a new ‘number ten’, as it comes with its own share of economic benefits.

With Barcelona gearing up for their 125th anniversary, having a number ten can help the club maximise the economic potential.

Will Ansu Fati continue as the ‘number ten’?

Ansu Fati, having returned from his loan spell at Brighton, currently dons the number ten shirt at Barcelona.

However, the club agree that whoever dons the iconic jersey must play an important role in the team. After all, the jersey was home to iconic players such as Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho in the past, reports Diario AS.

Given Fati’s recent struggles, coupled with his uncertain future at Camp Nou, Barcelona broadly agree that the shirt must go to someone else.

Lamine Yamal favourite to don the iconic kit

The report adds that the Barcelona camp are favouring Lamine Yamal to take over as the new number ten.

Although the responsibilities that come up with the number ten shirt could be too much for a player, who is yet to even turn 17, many agree that Yamal can handle the pressure.

The Spaniard has already shown exceptional maturity and pedigree at the highest level of football and could soon lead Spain to their first European Championship in 12 years.

The player has expressed a desire to wear the prestigious kit in the past and there is no reason why he shouldn’t, especially considering the fact that he is now an official member of the first-team.

However, the decision may hinge on Ansu Fati and whether or not he relinquishes the iconic shirt.
