Pau Cubarsi has enjoyed a sensational breakthrough campaign with Barcelona, becoming a mainstay at the heart of the defence at the age of just 17.

Having made his debut over three months ago in January, Cubarsi has now become an indispensable member of Xavi Hernandez’s team.

The Catalan heavyweights, as such, have been working towards a contract renewal for the 17-year-old, given that his current deal runs out in 2026 and includes a measly release clause of €10 million.

Cubarsi one step away from renewal

Now, Mundo Deportivo has come forward with a huge update on the renewal status of Pau Cubarsi at Barcelona.

The 17-year-old is indeed said to be just one step away from signing a new long-term deal with Barcelona which will come as a huge boost for the Catalan giants.

The two parties already have reached a pact on the economic aspects of the contract. The footballer will sign a deal with an increasing salary and now only the duration of the contract remains to be specified.

Barça want Cubarsi to renew for six years, while the player prefers five, but according to negotiation sources consulted by the outlet, they are clear that this will not be an obstacle.

As per the report, Barcelona are following the Lamine Yamal formula with Cubarsi as well, wherein they will modify the current contract appropriate to the role he has acquired within the squad for now.

And, once he reaches the age of majority next January, the defender will sign the extension that will run until 2030.

Another issue pending resolution is to see how the new contract will fit within La Liga’s ‘fair play’. As such, it is not ruled out that next season he could start with a reserve team card and subsequently have a first-team card, as was proposed to Gavi.

What about the release clause?

With this renewal, Barça not only ensured the continuity of a young prospect who is already a key player for the team, both for the present and the future, but also kept away all the clubs that were after him to convince him to move.

His quality and projection, added to the fact that he had a clause of less than 10 million, had made him a very desirable player for all the big clubs in Europe. Now, Cubarsi will have an unaffordable clause.

Barça, in order to show their faith in him and give him the reputation he deserves, wanted him to join the €1 billion club, just like Gavi, Ronald Araujo, Pedri or Lamine Yamal.

On the player’s side, they do not see the need to reach that figure, but they will still accept that the player has an unaffordable clause, as for example Fermín Lopez, who has it set at 400 million.
